Toyota RAV4 Keys & Fobs
RAV4 key tech depends on the year. Roughly 2006 through 2012 models use a transponder chip key (Toyota's 4D/G-chip family) that has to be cut to the ignition and programmed to the car's immobilizer. From about 2013 to 2018 many RAV4s moved to a remote-head key, where the cut blade and the remote buttons are one unit, still transponder-backed. The 2019 and newer fifth-gen RAV4 and the RAV4 Hybrid/Prime use a proximity smart key (push-to-start) with Toyota's H-chip immobilizer, and that smart fob has to be registered to the car electronically. We pull the right key type by VIN, cut it (laser-cut/sidewinder blades on newer trims), and program it to your RAV4 with Autel and Xtool gear so the immobilizer and remote both work before we leave.
A very common RAV4 call is the smart fob that "stopped working" on 2019-and-newer push-to-start models. Most of the time it's a dead CR2032 coin cell inside the fob, not a failed key. The giveaway: the dash shows a low-key-battery warning, range drops to a few feet, or the car won't detect the fob unless you hold it right against the start button. Swapping the coin cell brings it back, no programming needed. If the buttons are physically worn or cracked from years in a pocket, we can shell-swap the fob or program a fresh proximity key instead.
Toyota RAV4 Key Fob FCC IDs
Flip your fob over: the FCC ID is printed on the back of the case. Find it below, or just read it to our dispatcher. It tells us the exact remote your Toyota RAV4 takes before the van rolls out.
| Years | Key type | FCC ID |
|---|---|---|
| 2006-2012 | Remote / chip key | HYQ12BBY |
| 2013-2018 | Remote-head key | GQ4-52T |
| 2019-2022 | Proximity smart fob | HYQ14FBC |
Spare key with a working key in hand: from $75. Full replacement, no key at all: from $189. Smart and proximity fobs price above basic chip keys; the exact flat number comes with your VIN on the call.
Trim and market can change the fob, and several IDs often fit one model year. We confirm the exact part by VIN on every job, so a mismatched guess never reaches your driveway.
Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the year. An older transponder or remote-head key for a 2013-2018 RAV4 is on the lower end. The 2019-and-newer proximity smart fob (push-to-start) costs more because the fob itself is pricier and the programming is more involved. Most RAV4 jobs land well under dealer pricing, and we quote the exact number by VIN before any work starts.
