Toyota Highlander Keys & Fobs
The Toyota Highlander has used a few different setups depending on year. Older Highlanders (mid-2000s through about 2013) typically run a transponder key with a chip in the head, often the Toyota "G" chip on later ones, cut on a standard edge blade. From roughly 2014 to 2019, most Highlanders moved to a remote-head key or a proximity smart key with push-to-start, and many use a laser-cut (sidewinder) blade. The current generation (2020 and up) is almost all proximity smart key, push-to-start, with a hidden emergency blade tucked inside the fob. Every one of these has to be programmed to your specific Highlander, not just cut. We pull the key code from your VIN, cut the blade (edge or laser depending on year), and program the transponder or smart key to the immobilizer with our Autel IM608 right there. Smart fobs also need to register to the vehicle's smart-key system, which we handle on-site.
A common one on the 2014-and-up Highlanders is a smart fob that gets weak or quits unlocking the doors from a distance, then eventually won't start the truck even when you hold it against the start button. Nine times out of ten that's just the CR2032 coin battery inside the fob dying, and a fresh one brings it right back. The other frequent call is a worn-out fob where the buttons have gone mushy or the case is cracked from years in a pocket. If the internals are shot, we cut and program a fresh smart key by VIN so you're not babying a fob that's about to strand you.
Toyota Highlander Key Fob FCC IDs
Flip your fob over: the FCC ID is printed on the back of the case. Find it below, or just read it to our dispatcher. It tells us the exact remote your Toyota Highlander takes before the van rolls out.
| Years | Key type | FCC ID |
|---|---|---|
| 2008-2013 | Smart key | HYQ14AAB |
| 2014-2019 | Proximity smart fob | HYQ14FBA |
| 2020-2024 | Proximity smart fob | HYQ14FBC |
Spare key with a working key in hand: from $75. Full replacement, no key at all: from $189. Smart and proximity fobs price above basic chip keys; the exact flat number comes with your VIN on the call.
Trim and market can change the fob, and several IDs often fit one model year. We confirm the exact part by VIN on every job, so a mismatched guess never reaches your driveway.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. An all-keys-lost Highlander takes a bit more work because there's no working key to learn from, but we handle it on-site. We pull your key code by VIN, cut a fresh blade, and program it straight to the immobilizer. Push-to-start Highlanders take longer than the older transponder ones, but it's still typically a same-day job in your driveway.
