Nissan Frontier

Nissan Frontier Keys & Fobs

The Nissan Frontier's key setup depends on the generation. The long-running second gen (roughly 2005 through 2021) mostly uses a transponder key with a separate plug-in remote, or on higher trims a remote-head key that combines the blade and buttons in one shell. The blade is a standard Nissan cut, and the chip has to be programmed to the truck's immobilizer before it'll start the engine. The fully redesigned 2022-and-up Frontier moved to proximity (push-to-start) on most trims, where the smart fob talks to the truck wirelessly and starts it with the button. Every one of these needs immobilizer programming, not just a key cut. We pull the security data by VIN and program the transponder or smart fob on-site with Autel and Xtool gear, then test start and lock/unlock before we leave.

A common one on the older Frontiers is the buttons wearing out on the plug-in remote or remote-head key. The lock and unlock pads quit responding even though the key still starts the truck, which usually means a cracked board or worn button contacts inside a beat-up shell, sometimes paired with a dead CR2032 coin battery. We'll swap the coin cell first since that's the cheap fix, and if the board's worn we cut and program a fresh remote-head key so the doors and engine both work off one key again.

Nissan Frontier Key Fob FCC IDs

Flip your fob over: the FCC ID is printed on the back of the case. Find it below, or just read it to our dispatcher. It tells us the exact remote your Nissan Frontier takes before the van rolls out.

Spare key with a working key in hand: from $75. Full replacement, no key at all: from $189. Smart and proximity fobs price above basic chip keys; the exact flat number comes with your VIN on the call.

Trim and market can change the fob, and several IDs often fit one model year. We confirm the exact part by VIN on every job, so a mismatched guess never reaches your driveway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. An all-keys-lost Frontier takes longer than adding a spare because we have to pull security data from the truck and generate a key from scratch, but we handle it on-site by VIN. Bring or have the VIN and proof it's your truck. We cut the blade, program the transponder or smart fob to the immobilizer, and confirm it starts before we go.
