Nissan Altima Keys & Fobs

Which key your Altima takes depends on the year. Older Altimas (roughly 2002 to 2006) use a transponder key with a chip in the head, plus a separate remote, cut to a standard edge-cut blade. From about 2007 forward the Altima moved to the Nissan Intelligent Key, a proximity (push-to-start) smart fob that unlocks the doors when it's near and starts the car with a button, paired with a laser-cut sidewinder emergency blade tucked inside the fob. Some base trims in the 2007 to 2012 range got a remote-head key with a turn ignition instead of the full proximity setup. Every one of these has to be programmed to the Altima's immobilizer (the BCM, in Nissan's system) so the car recognizes it; that's done with a programmer through the OBD port, and we pull the security data by VIN when needed. Smart fobs cost more than a basic transponder key because of the proximity electronics, so the year and trim drive the price.

A common one on the 2013-and-up Altima: the Intelligent Key stops unlocking the doors or the dash flashes a "Key System Error" or "No Key Detected" warning. Most of the time it's the little CR2025 coin cell inside the fob going flat, not the fob itself. The fix is cheap, but there's a catch most owners miss: if the fob is dead, you can still start the car by pressing the fob against the start button while you push it. Worn or unresponsive fob buttons are the other regular complaint on higher-mileage Altimas; if a fresh battery doesn't bring it back, the fob's board is worn and we'll cut and program a replacement on the spot.

Nissan Altima Key Fob FCC IDs

Flip your fob over: the FCC ID is printed on the back of the case. Find it below, or just read it to our dispatcher. It tells us the exact remote your Nissan Altima takes before the van rolls out.

Spare key with a working key in hand: from $75. Full replacement, no key at all: from $189. Smart and proximity fobs price above basic chip keys; the exact flat number comes with your VIN on the call.

Trim and market can change the fob, and several IDs often fit one model year. We confirm the exact part by VIN on every job, so a mismatched guess never reaches your driveway.

Yes. We program Altima Intelligent Keys and transponder keys on-site through the OBD port with our own equipment. For most model years we pull the immobilizer security data by VIN, so we don't need to send anything to Nissan and you don't need an appointment at the dealer.
