Ford Mustang Keys & Fobs
Which key your Mustang uses depends on the year. Older Mustangs (mid-2000s through about 2014) run a transponder key with a 4D-style Ford chip in the head and a traditional cut blade, often the 3-button remote-head key that combines the blade and fob buttons in one piece. From roughly 2015 on, the S550 generation moved to push-to-start trim with a proximity (smart) fob, while base models kept a bladed transponder key. The current S650 Mustang uses a proximity fob across the lineup. Every one of these needs the key or fob married to the car's PATS immobilizer through the OBD port, and proximity fobs also have to be paired so the car recognizes them for entry and push-button start. We pull your VIN, cut the correct blade or emergency insert, and program the transponder or smart fob on the spot.
A very common one on the remote-head Mustang keys: the rubber button pad wears out, so lock/unlock stops responding even though the key still starts the car. People assume the fob is dead and order a whole new one, but often it's just the worn shell or a dead coin-cell battery inside. We can re-shell the key and move your working transponder chip over, or swap the CR2032-style battery, so you keep a programmed key without paying for a full replacement. The other frequent call is a one-key Mustang where the owner lost the spare; we cut and program a second key by VIN so you're not stranded if the only one walks off.
Ford Mustang Key Fob FCC IDs
Flip your fob over: the FCC ID is printed on the back of the case. Find it below, or just read it to our dispatcher. It tells us the exact remote your Ford Mustang takes before the van rolls out.
| Years | Key type | FCC ID |
|---|---|---|
| 2010-2014 | Remote-head key | CWTWB1U793 |
| 2015-2022 | Proximity smart fob | M3N-A2C31243300 |
Spare key with a working key in hand: from $75. Full replacement, no key at all: from $189. Smart and proximity fobs price above basic chip keys; the exact flat number comes with your VIN on the call.
Trim and market can change the fob, and several IDs often fit one model year. We confirm the exact part by VIN on every job, so a mismatched guess never reaches your driveway.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. If you've lost all keys, we generate the cut from your VIN and program a fresh transponder key or proximity fob to your car's PATS system. It takes longer than adding a spare because the immobilizer has to be reset, but we handle the whole job at your location.
