Honda HR-V Keys & Fobs
The HR-V key changed with the generation. The first-gen HR-V (2016-2022) mostly uses a Honda transponder remote-head key with a HITAG/G-chip in the head and a separate remote, and some trims got the proximity smart fob for push-to-start with keyless entry. The redesigned second-gen HR-V (2023 and up) runs a proximity (push-to-start) smart fob across the lineup, with a hidden emergency blade inside for the door. Either way it isn't a cut-and-go job: the chip or smart fob has to be married to your HR-V's immobilizer through the OBD port, and the metal blade is cut to your VIN. We do both with the car in front of us.
A common one on the HR-V smart fob is the door responding but push-to-start not working, or the dash flashing a "key not detected" warning. Nine times out of ten that's a dead CR2032 coin cell inside the fob, not a dead fob. The fix is a fresh battery, and we'll confirm the fob still talks to the car before we leave. If the buttons themselves are cracked or mushy from years of pocket wear, that's a worn fob, and we cut and program a fresh one on the spot.
Honda HR-V Key Fob FCC IDs
Flip your fob over: the FCC ID is printed on the back of the case. Find it below, or just read it to our dispatcher. It tells us the exact remote your Honda HR-V takes before the van rolls out.
| Years | Key type | FCC ID |
|---|---|---|
| 2016-2022 | Remote-head / smart by trim | MLBHLIK6-1TA, KR5V1X |
| 2023-2024 | Proximity smart fob | KR5TP-4 |
Spare key with a working key in hand: from $75. Full replacement, no key at all: from $189. Smart and proximity fobs price above basic chip keys; the exact flat number comes with your VIN on the call.
Trim and market can change the fob, and several IDs often fit one model year. We confirm the exact part by VIN on every job, so a mismatched guess never reaches your driveway.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. An all-keys-lost HR-V is a normal job for us, it just takes longer than adding a spare. We pull your immobilizer data through the OBD port, cut a fresh blade to your VIN, and program the transponder or smart fob from scratch so the engine will start. Bring or have your photo ID and proof you own the HR-V handy.
Try the backup first: most HR-Vs let you press the fob directly against the start button to start the car off the backup transponder coil. If that works, the fob's remote board may be failing and needs reprogramming or replacement. If it doesn't, we'll test the fob and the car's antenna ring on-site and tell you which one is the problem before you pay for a new fob.
For most HR-V keys, yes. A basic transponder remote-head runs less than the smart proximity fob, which costs more because of the chip and programming, but both usually land well under what the dealer quotes once you add their programming fee and the tow. We come to you, so there's no tow at all.
A 2017 HR-V usually runs Honda's remote-head transponder key, with the proximity smart fob on push-to-start trims. We bring both options and program at the car. The redesigned 2023-and-up models are all smart fob. Whichever year you've got, the VIN tells us the right blank before we roll out.
It depends on the year. 2016-2022 Honda HR-V: MLBHLIK6-1TA or KR5V1X; 2023-2024 Honda HR-V: KR5TP-4. The ID is printed on the back of your fob case. Trim and market can change it, so we confirm the exact part by VIN before the van rolls out.
