Jeep Cherokee Keys & Fobs

Which key your Cherokee takes depends on the year. Older KL-era Cherokees (roughly 2014-2018) typically use a remote-head transponder key: a flip or fixed-blade key with a laser-cut (sidewinder) blade and a chip built into the head, where the remote buttons and the immobilizer chip live in one unit. Newer Cherokees and most KL trims moved to a proximity (push-to-start) smart fob, where you keep the fob in your pocket and start with a button. Both have to be cut to your VIN and then programmed to the car's immobilizer so the engine will start, and proximity fobs also need the keyless-entry side onboarded. We pull the cut from your VIN and program everything on-site with Autel and Xtool gear, so a working key leaves with us, not a blank.

A common one on the Cherokee is "key fob not detected" or the dash flashing a no-key warning, especially on the push-to-start trims. Nine times out of ten it's the coin cell battery inside the fob (a CR2032), and the fix is a 2-dollar battery swap, not a new fob. If a fresh battery doesn't bring it back, the fob's circuit board or the antenna ring around the start button can be the culprit, and we can test the fob and program a replacement on the spot if it's truly dead. The other big one is owners down to their last key. Don't wait until it's lost. A second key cut and programmed now is far cheaper than an all-keys-lost job later.

Jeep Cherokee Key Fob FCC IDs

Flip your fob over: the FCC ID is printed on the back of the case. Find it below, or just read it to our dispatcher. It tells us the exact remote your Jeep Cherokee takes before the van rolls out.

Spare key with a working key in hand: from $75. Full replacement, no key at all: from $189. Smart and proximity fobs price above basic chip keys; the exact flat number comes with your VIN on the call.

Trim and market can change the fob, and several IDs often fit one model year. We confirm the exact part by VIN on every job, so a mismatched guess never reaches your driveway.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on whether you've got an older remote-head transponder key or a newer push-to-start proximity fob, since smart fobs cost more. Most Cherokee jobs run a few hundred dollars, and we're usually well under dealer pricing because there's no markup on the part and no separate programming fee. We'll quote you a flat number before we drive out, parts and programming included.
