Mazda CX-9 Keys & Fobs
The CX-9 changed key tech between generations. First-gen CX-9s (2007-2015) use a transponder key, mostly a remote-head key that combines a cut blade and the lock/unlock remote in one shell, with a chip in the head that the immobilizer has to recognize. Second-gen CX-9s (2016-2023) moved to a proximity smart fob for push-to-start trims, with a side-cut (sidewinder) emergency blade hidden inside for the door. Either type has to be married to your CX-9's immobilizer, and a proximity fob also has to be paired so the car detects it inside the cabin. We do both programming jobs on-site by VIN with our Autel IM608, and on most CX-9s we can add a spare or do an all-keys-lost reprogram without a dealer visit.
The most common CX-9 fob complaint we get is a proximity fob that works only when you hold it right against the start button or door handle, then quits. Nine times out of ten that's a dead CR2025 coin cell inside the smart key, not a failed fob. Pop the emergency blade out, split the case, and swap the battery; if the lock and unlock buttons have gone mushy or stopped responding while the proximity still works, the rubber button pad or the board has worn out and the fob shell needs replacing and reprogramming. We can test the fob, replace the battery, or cut and program a fresh one on the spot.
Mazda CX-9 Key Fob FCC IDs
Flip your fob over: the FCC ID is printed on the back of the case. Find it below, or just read it to our dispatcher. It tells us the exact remote your Mazda CX-9 takes before the van rolls out.
| Years | Key type | FCC ID |
|---|---|---|
| 2007-2015 | Smart key | KR55WK49383 |
| 2016-2023 | Proximity smart fob | WAZSKE13D01, WAZSKE13D02 |
Spare key with a working key in hand: from $75. Full replacement, no key at all: from $189. Smart and proximity fobs price above basic chip keys; the exact flat number comes with your VIN on the call.
Trim and market can change the fob, and several IDs often fit one model year. We confirm the exact part by VIN on every job, so a mismatched guess never reaches your driveway.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. All-keys-lost is a normal job on the CX-9. We pull the immobilizer data by VIN, generate and cut a new key or proximity fob, and program it to your car on-site. It takes longer than adding a spare, but you don't need a tow to the dealer.
