Mazda CX-5 Keys & Fobs

Which key the CX-5 uses depends on the year and trim. Earlier first-gen CX-5s (roughly 2013-2016) on lower trims came with a remote-head key, a laser-cut (sidewinder) blade with a transponder chip and the remote buttons built into the head, turned in the ignition. Higher trims and most CX-5s from around 2017 on use a proximity smart key (push-to-start), where you keep the fob in your pocket and the car reads it over RF. Both types have to be programmed to the car's immobilizer, not just cut. We pull the key data by VIN and program the new fob on-site with Autel IM608 gear, so it both starts the car and works the lock buttons. On push-to-start CX-5s, the spare-key emergency blade inside the fob still needs to be cut to match your doors.

A common one on the smart-key CX-5s: the fob starts acting flaky, where you have to hold it right against the start button, or the doors stop unlocking on approach. Nine times out of ten that's just the coin cell (a CR2025) dying inside the fob, not the fob itself. A fresh battery fixes it. The other frequent call is a worn or cracked fob where the buttons have stopped clicking after years of pocket use; at that point a new fob shell and a fresh program is the cleaner fix than babying the old one. If your CX-5 won't start at all and you're down to no working key, we can still cut and program a fresh one by VIN.

Mazda CX-5 Key Fob FCC IDs

Flip your fob over: the FCC ID is printed on the back of the case. Find it below, or just read it to our dispatcher. It tells us the exact remote your Mazda CX-5 takes before the van rolls out.

Spare key with a working key in hand: from $75. Full replacement, no key at all: from $189. Smart and proximity fobs price above basic chip keys; the exact flat number comes with your VIN on the call.

Trim and market can change the fob, and several IDs often fit one model year. We confirm the exact part by VIN on every job, so a mismatched guess never reaches your driveway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. An all-keys-lost CX-5 is a normal job for us. We read the immobilizer data through the VIN, cut a fresh blade, and program a working fob on-site. It takes a little longer than adding a spare, but you don't need to tow it to the dealer.
