The Sportage's key tech depends on the year. Older Sportages (mid-2000s) use a basic metal transponder key with a chip in the head that has to be paired to the immobilizer. The 2011-2016 (SL) and 2017-2022 (QL) generations split between a laser-cut (sidewinder) remote-head key on base trims and a proximity smart fob on push-to-start models. The 2023+ (NQ5) Sportage runs proximity smart fobs on most trims, with a flip-style remote on the base setup. Every one of these needs to be programmed to the car's immobilizer, not just cut.
