Kia Sportage

Kia Sportage Keys & Fobs

The Sportage's key tech depends on the year. Older Sportages (mid-2000s) use a basic metal transponder key with a chip in the head that has to be paired to the immobilizer. The 2011-2016 (SL) and 2017-2022 (QL) generations split between a laser-cut (sidewinder) remote-head key on base trims and a proximity smart fob on push-to-start models. The 2023+ (NQ5) Sportage runs proximity smart fobs on most trims, with a flip-style remote on the base setup. Every one of these needs to be programmed to the car's immobilizer, not just cut. Smart fobs and remote-head keys are paired through the OBD port, and Kia typically gates that with a security PIN tied to the VIN, so this isn't a job you can do with a hardware-store copy.

A really common one on the Sportage: the smart fob still unlocks the doors but the truck won't recognize it for push-to-start, or the buttons get mushy and stop responding. Nine times out of ten that starts as a dead coin battery (a CR2032) inside the fob, and a fresh one brings it back. If a new battery doesn't fix it, the fob's buttons or board are worn out from years of pocket use, and you're better off replacing and programming a new proximity fob than chasing a flaky one. If you're down to a single working key, get a spare cut and programmed now, before that one fails and leaves you stuck paying for a tow.

Kia Sportage Key Fob FCC IDs

Flip your fob over: the FCC ID is printed on the back of the case. Find it below, or just read it to our dispatcher. It tells us the exact remote your Kia Sportage takes before the van rolls out.

Spare key with a working key in hand: from $75. Full replacement, no key at all: from $189. Smart and proximity fobs price above basic chip keys; the exact flat number comes with your VIN on the call.

Trim and market can change the fob, and several IDs often fit one model year. We confirm the exact part by VIN on every job, so a mismatched guess never reaches your driveway.
