Kia Sorento Keys & Fobs
Which key your Sorento uses depends on the year. Older Sorentos (mid-2000s through early 2010s) run a transponder key with a metal blade you turn in the ignition. From the 2011-2015 era many came with a remote-head key (the chip and the lock buttons share one housing) or an optional smart proximity fob on higher trims. The 2016-2020 third-gen and the 2021+ fourth-gen lean heavily on proximity push-to-start fobs, with sidewinder (laser-cut) emergency blades tucked inside. Every version is immobilizer-coded, so a new fob has to be both cut to your lock and programmed to the car's computer. We pull your key code from the VIN to cut the blade, then sync the transponder or smart fob to your Sorento with our Autel and Xtool programmers. Push-to-start Sorentos need the fob registered to the smart-key system; transponder versions need the chip married to the immobilizer. Neither works if you just buy a blank online and slot it in.
A common one on third- and fourth-gen Sorentos is the proximity fob going intermittent, the car stops recognizing it, throws a "key not detected" message, or you have to press the fob right against the start button to get it to crank. Most of the time it's the CR2032 coin battery inside dying, not the fob itself. We swap the battery and confirm it reads, and if the fob's internal board is actually worn or water-damaged we can cut and program a fresh smart fob on the spot. On older transponder Sorentos the usual complaint is the key turning hard or the ignition wearing out, which we can diagnose before you spend money on a key that wasn't the problem.
Kia Sorento Key Fob FCC IDs
Flip your fob over: the FCC ID is printed on the back of the case. Find it below, or just read it to our dispatcher. It tells us the exact remote your Kia Sorento takes before the van rolls out.
| Years | Key type | FCC ID |
|---|---|---|
| 2014-2019 | Proximity smart fob | TQ8-FOB-4F06 |
Spare key with a working key in hand: from $75. Full replacement, no key at all: from $189. Smart and proximity fobs price above basic chip keys; the exact flat number comes with your VIN on the call.
Trim and market can change the fob, and several IDs often fit one model year. We confirm the exact part by VIN on every job, so a mismatched guess never reaches your driveway.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. An all-keys-lost Sorento takes longer than adding a spare because we have to pull the key code from your VIN, cut a fresh blade, and program the immobilizer from scratch, but we do it at your location. Bring your ID and proof you own the Sorento. Push-to-start models add a step since the smart-key system has to be re-coded, so plan for a bit more time than a simple spare.
