Infiniti QX80 Keys & Fobs
Every QX80 uses a proximity smart fob, what Infiniti calls the Intelligent Key, paired with push-button start. There's no metal key you turn in an ignition, the truck reads the fob over short range so you keep it in your pocket. Inside each fob is a mechanical emergency blade that pulls out for the driver's door, plus an immobilizer chip the vehicle has to recognize before it'll crank. Programming isn't plug-and-play: a new fob has to be registered to your QX80's computer with a tool that talks to the immobilizer, and the cut emergency blade is matched to your door lock by VIN. Earlier QX80s (the 2011-2017 body) and the redesigned 2018-on trucks both run proximity Intelligent Keys, but the fob part and the registration steps differ between them, so the year matters.
The most common QX80 call we get is a worn-out fob. These trucks rack up miles and the rubber buttons crack or the case splits at the seam from years of pocket and keyring wear, and the lock/unlock or liftgate stops responding.
