Volvo XC90 Keys & Fobs
The XC90 uses two very different systems depending on the year. First-gen XC90s (2003-2014) run a transponder ignition key, with later years using a remote-head key that carries the lock/unlock buttons and the chip in one flip or fixed-blade unit. Second-gen XC90s (2015 and up, Volvo's SPA platform) use a slim proximity smart key, the Keyless Drive fob, with push-button start and passive entry. Both types have to be cut to your VIN and programmed to the car's immobilizer with the right tool, so a key cut at a hardware store will turn the lock but won't start the engine. On the newer proximity cars, the fob also has to be paired so the car recognizes it for keyless entry and push-start, not just spun on a duplicator. We pull your key code by VIN, cut the blade, and program the chip on the spot.
A common one on the newer XC90 (2015+) is a proximity fob that gets unreliable, where the car stops recognizing it unless you hold it right against the start button or the wireless charging pad. Most of the time that's a dead CR2032 coin cell inside the fob, and a fresh battery brings it back. If a new battery doesn't fix it, the fob's internal board may be worn or water-damaged, and we can program a replacement Keyless Drive fob to your XC90 without a dealer visit. On older 2003-2014 XC90s, the usual complaint is worn-out lock/unlock buttons or a flip key that's cracked at the hinge, which we fix by re-shelling or replacing the remote-head key and reprogramming it.
