On the XC90, XC60, and S60 from the SPA/CMA platform years, the fob talks to the car over an encrypted rolling-code system, and there's a hidden emergency laser-cut (sidewinder) blade tucked inside the fob for the door if the battery dies. Older S60 and XC60 fobs use a remote-head key with a transponder chip in the head and a cut blade you turn in the ignition. Either way, Volvo's immobilizer has to recognize the fob before the engine will crank, so a fob that isn't programmed to your specific car won't start it even if the buttons work.
