Subaru Outback Keys & Fobs

The Outback's key tech depends on the year. Older Outbacks (roughly mid-2000s through about 2014) use a transponder key with a Subaru G-chip in the head plus a separate flip or non-flip remote, cut to a standard edge-cut blade. Newer ones moved to a proximity smart fob for push-to-start trim, and remote-head transponder keys on key-start trim, both on a laser-cut (sidewinder) blade. Every one of these has to be programmed to the car's immobilizer, and proximity smart fobs also pair to the keyless system. We do that on-site with our Autel programmer through the OBD port, no dealer trip needed. Pull your fob and look: a removable metal emergency blade and a push-to-start button means proximity smart key; a key you physically turn in the ignition means transponder or remote-head.

A common one on Outbacks is the smart fob acting flaky before it fully dies. The remote range drops, push-to-start needs two or three tries, or the dash throws a key-not-detected warning. Nine times out of ten it's the CR2032 coin battery inside the fob, not the car. We can swap that in a couple minutes and confirm it. The other frequent call is the single-key Outback, an owner who bought used and only got one fob. Lose that and there's no spare to copy, so we cut and program a fresh one from the VIN and recommend keeping a backup.

Subaru Outback Key Fob FCC IDs

Flip your fob over: the FCC ID is printed on the back of the case. Find it below, or just read it to our dispatcher. It tells us the exact remote your Subaru Outback takes before the van rolls out.

Spare key with a working key in hand: from $75. Full replacement, no key at all: from $189. Smart and proximity fobs price above basic chip keys; the exact flat number comes with your VIN on the call.

Trim and market can change the fob, and several IDs often fit one model year. We confirm the exact part by VIN on every job, so a mismatched guess never reaches your driveway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. No working key needed. We pull your Outback's key code from the VIN, cut the blade to match, and program the new transponder or smart fob to the immobilizer through the OBD port. It takes longer than copying a spare, so plan on roughly an hour on-site.
