Three layers. The hardware: a proximity fob is a sealed electronic device, not a blank. The cut: newer blades are laser-cut (sidewinder) and need a machine a hardware store does not own. The programming: our techs connect an Autel IM508 to the OBD port and register the new key with the immobilizer, a step that cannot be skipped and cannot be done by mail. None of those layers exists on a 1998 key, which is why old keys cost pocket change and new ones do not.
Where the dealer number comes from
The dealership sells the same fob with a parts-counter markup, bills the programming as shop labor at shop rates, and needs the car physically there, which for a lost-key situation means a tow.
