Can a Locksmith Program a Key Fob?

Yes. A mobile automotive locksmith programs key fobs at your location (transponder chips, remote-head keys, and push-to-start proximity fobs) by talking to the immobilizer through the OBD port. Programming starts at $99 and most jobs take under an hour at the car.

What programming actually does

A fob out of the box is a stranger to your car. Programming registers its chip ID with the immobilizer and syncs the remote functions, so the engine starts and the buttons work. On most makes we do this with dealer-grade tools (Autel IM608 class) in the driveway. Some models also need every existing fob present during the session, so we tell you that on the phone and you have them ready.

What a locksmith cannot program

Honesty corner: a fob that is VIN-locked to another vehicle, some refurbished clones, and the newest model years before aftermarket data exists. If your fob or car falls in that group, you hear it before we dispatch, not after a trip charge.

Can I program a fob myself?

A few older models have an onboard procedure (door-and-ignition dances you can find in the manual). Most cars made after the early 2010s require a diagnostic tool on the OBD port, and that is the part a locksmith brings.

Do you program fobs bought online?

Usually yes, from $99, as long as the fob is new and not locked to another VIN. We cannot warranty third-party hardware, and we say so up front.
